No strings attached. Enjoy!

We released a new software release (3.0.4)  for the HP Touchpad a few minutes ago. It gets downloaded over the air and is automatically updated to your devices. As always, no strings attached. Enjoy.

We have a big number of TouchPads out there, and we wanted to continue serving users and developers.  We improved performance, added better support for the camera, made connectivity with non-HP phones possible, improved messaging, touched the UI in many places, etc. Also, we’ve got over 1000 applications available for TouchPad through Application Catalogue.

We have also continued longer term architectural development for webOS. We are working hard around webKit and V8. Those are core engines for the whole webOS. The Enyo framework and developer tools are getting a lot of attention now. We have also some very cool development around UI especially in the area of working with many task simultaneously, and using the table screen even more efficiently. The web development model, strong cloud integration, and a fluid and beautiful UI are the cornerstones of webOS.

WebOS is a good operating system. I’ve done my own polls lately, too. I can see many TouchPad’s in Starbucks, Peets, and other such places. I often go and ask a user what they think about it. I’m getting very positive feedback! Last week I had my car in a repair shop for maintenance. I was in the waiting room working on my TouchPad when a mechanic came to me to deliver the keys. “Hey, I’ve got a TouchPad, too. I love it!”.

I’m really happy being able to ship this latest release to you. So, go ahead and try it!

P.S. No, I don’t have a tablet for you.
P.P.S. No, I don’t have news about that.

Can you explain what is meant when you say, "made connectivity with non-HP phones possible".

Are we talking about text messaging through the TouchPad? Or just blutooth phone calls?

Great news that WebOS is being kept alive, I would be very happy if the Veer would get some attention too. It's a great little phone but quite buggy and still lacking Touch to share...

Thanks for the update! You can count me as one of many who are also very happy with WebOS. I don't care about this whole Android porting to the touchpad business; it seems a bit of a downgrade to me to go from such an awesome OS to Android.

Keep up the good work!

Does this mean that you guys finally added Windows live messenger / MSN support?

I cant even message anyone on my touchpad since all my friends are on Windows Live Messenger and that was not supported.

Ari since HP pulled the cord on devices I wonder what talented people like you doing there.. So is good to hear that hard work is still being done on core parts of WebOS. Thanks for the update and keep it up. I have been using Palm Pre since first day it came out. Will get an Iphone one of this days but there is nothing more elegant and smart as WebOS. The notifications on Touchpad are simply perfect. Thanks and write more often lol.

Just want to say, this is a very good update. Before, I could only recommend the TouchPad to folks knowledgable enough to disable logging, setup PreWare and all that hoo-ha.

Updated, and with govnah at default, the thing is perky as all get out.

I very, very much wish HP had given you enough time to put it in this state before the release of the TouchPad. On the other hand if you had been able to, I wouldn't likely own one.

My Handspring Visor says thank you

Im something of a tech junkie and have, or have extensively played with, iPad 1 and 2 as well as the original Galaxy Tab and the ASUS eeepad Transformer. Most would consider me an Apple fanboy - but the truth is I prefer the Touchpad. Tech journos complained it was too fat - I say it is more comfortable to hold than the iPad... For some reason it is my preferred Kindle reading device as well - although I find the app a bit buggy. At the end of the day the only thing that holds back webOS is the current lack of apps. Im sure if HP had held on they would have been able to carve out a profitable market niche... For years Apple held on with a very small market share - it seems like in business today unless you can be number one you shouldn't bother. Is there something really so wrong with making a good niche product with reasonable growth and profit. As a message to the HP board - its no good comparing yourself to the stunning results Apple have had in recent years and saying 'if we can't match that we will take our ball and go home'. Stay the course - you can see that there are webOS loyalists - give them products. Im sure Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard would have been delighted with a product as big a webOS 50 years ago!!!

Hi Ari, keep up the good work for WebOS! I hope Meg will revert Leos decision and we will over WebOS devices again.

Some things, you should try to implement in a future update are

-default proxy setting (server or pac file). The homebrew apps do not serve all apps that require internet connectivity

- Some keyboard adjustments (cursor, undo function, repeat)

- maybe you can adopt some of the uber homebrew patches into the next update (ubercalendar hd)

Hi. As a fellow HP employe who is "supporting" a lot of other HP people with their new Touchpads, thanks for the update. I am experiencing a problem that other precentral users are reporting - which is that the Touchpad no longer charges with the case on while docked on the Touchstone. Can you please investigate?

10/19/2011 10:13 AM
Anonymous Derek said...

QUESTION: it appears that you lowered the touchstone range. I was able to charge on touchstone with the touchpad's case's cover folded back on itself. That adds about 6-7mm distance. It would charge just fine in 3.0.2. But it 3.0.4 I have to sometimes take the TP out of its case to charge on the touchpad or have to leave the cover flap closed in front of the TP which defeats the purpose of exhibition.

I hope in the next update, you restore the touchstone sensitivity range back to what it was in 3.0.2.

I have no touchstone issues. I always charge it per the instructions with the cover folded down in front in landscape mode.

Thanks again webos team. And Meg...do the right thing here.

WebOS just needs one thing...

WHATSAPP support in Synergy for Touchpad/Pre3 usage. Not joking now, I can't sell my iPhone because WebOS is the only operating system out there that doesn't have whatsapp. Like, every friend of mine uses whatsapp. On iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows phone... You name it.

One other thing missing and irritating: Silverlight plugin for playing those videos

Last but not least: why is there only infrastructure WiFi programmed into WebOS and not ad-hoc like every modern piece of electronics?

For the rest, I love WebOS. But the stuff above should be added...

Thrilled to see that development of webOS continues. I hated to part ways with my Pre in favor of Android over the lack of third-party developer support because webOS is still by far the best mobile OS, bar none. Do appreciate that WebOS engineers kept developing for the TouchPad(despite HP dropping support of it)software and brought us that nice update yesterday. However, I will like to see more development from HP to the TouchPad in these aspects of the WebOS software:

1) Bring amazon music store app to the TouchPad, to purchase music on the go.
2) Update the just type bar at the top, bringing voice activated commands like Google voice search.
3) Optimized the built-in browser for faster page loading and rendering images on websites.
4) Bring to the TouchPad the task application like the WebOS phones.
5) Upgrade the way application gets shown in exhibition mode; like placing the clock together with a weather app to display information relevant to the common user.
6) Editing capabilities to the camera app on the Touchpad and photo built-in application

Thanks for all the hard work, I love my TouchPad & Pre3. Also my 70+ year old mother loves her TouchPad as well, and like me she is upset by HP's mishandling of webOS.

Hi Ari, all the respect to the WebOS developers' family.

Besides the obvious improvements mentioned by everyone, I noticed that synergy does not sync any lnger my Facebook photos. In the Pictures App on my Tp all I have left is empty folders from what used to be the Facebook folders. Can this be worked around?

Thanks Ari! The fact that updates are still happening is great! I love my palm pre and got a touchpad because of that fact. I bought a pre 3 too and can't wait to get it activated. One problem with the update. The accelerometer lags when playing asphalt race game. Also, I noticed that the sensitivity of the touchstone is less. I can't charge with the cover folded behind anymore. Please include these fixes in your next update if you could. Thanks!

Oh no. It upgraded to 3.0.4 automatically when I placed it on charging dock, then it wouldn't charge anymore with Targus case on which worked perfectly with 3.0.2.

Now I have to take off the case to charge on the dock. I'd like to get 3.0.2 back. How can I do that?

It is a problem with 3rd party cases or hp cases as well.

so far I'm loving the new update. It's sad that HP and Apothea** and HP's incompetent BoD had to screw up royally.

Thank you very much for all the work on the update. Update went smoothly and the performance tweaks are noticeable. Camera app is pretty decent, too. I'd like to include my vote for an ad-hoc WiFi patch or change to the next (hopefully) upgrade.

You said "made connectivity with non-HP phones possible". Does that mean adhoc wlan is finally supported?

One of the most amazing lack of feature in my HPTouchpad. I would like to use Nokia C7 JoikuSpot for connectivity. Atm it does not work.

Ari,
just a friendly notice, please leave HP and join back Nokia again (if you want, otherwise you could try with Google's droid, probably you sent your cv already). There's no future with webOS anymore, don't you see that even Meg doesn't like webOS?
